Game Classifications (Age Ratings)

The Pan European Games Information Ratings (PEGI)

The Pan European Games Information (PEGI) age rating system is a new, pan-European age rating system for interactive games. Designed to ensure that minors are not exposed to games that are unsuitable for their particular age group, the system is supported by the major console manufacturers, including PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo, as well as by publishers and developers of interactive games throughout Europe. The products may be rated as follows:

PEGI 3+ - The content is considered suitable for all age groups.

PEGI 7+ - Children can be exposed to a little violence but this can only be to non-realistic fantasy characters. Suitable for those 7 years old and over.

PEGI 12+ - Any violence may be slightly more graphic but still towards fantasy characters only. There is no violence towards human-looking characters or recognizable animals. Suitable for those 12 years old and over.

PEGI 16+ - Adult behavior and violence may start to look life-like. Suitable for those 16 years old and over.

PEGI 18+ - The adult classification is applied to games that are suitable only for adult players. Here the subject matter and graphical details can mirror levels of detail in the storytelling found in adult television series and movies. Suitable for those 18 years old and over.

The British Board of Film Classification Ratings (BBFC)

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an independent body which was originally established by the film industry in 1912. This was because local authorities were imposing their own, widely varying censorship of films under legislation intended to give them controls over safety standards in cinemas. Local Authorities, from early on, accepted the decisions of the Board. There are obvious benefits to Local Authorities as well as to the film industry in having a central body like the BBFC to bring consistency to the classification process, but still remain independent of both, and to accept responsiblity for decisions taken. The products may be rated as follows:

BBFC Uc - Particularly suitable for pre-school children.

BBFC U - It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. U films or video game should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.

BBFC PG - Parental Guidance. General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. Unaccompanied children of any age may watch. A PG film or video game should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.

BBFC 12+ - Suitable for 12 years and over. No-one younger than 12 may see a 12 film in a cinema or video game unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a 12 rated video or DVD or video game. Responsibility for allowing under-12s to view lies with the accompanying or supervising adult.

BBFC 15+ - Suitable only for 15 years and over. No-one younger than 15 may see a 15 film in a cinema or video game. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video or DVD or video game.

BBFC 18+ - Suitable only for adults. No-one younger than 18 may see an 18 film in a cinema or video game. No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an 18 rated video or video game.

The Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association Ratings (ELSPA)

Games and software which are not legally required to be rated by the BBFC are voluntarily rated by their publishers under the ELSPA voluntary ratings scheme. The ELSPA ratings are designed in association with the Video Standards Council to give consumers (parents in particular) an indication of the age ranges a particular product is most suitable for. As with the BBFC ratings, the ELSPA recommended ages relate to suitability for viewing and not to the difficulty or playability of the game itself. The products may be rated as follows:

ELSPA 3+ - This means the game or software is suitable for all ages. However, some 3+ games may require skills that make them unsuitable for younger children.

ELSPA 11+ - Suitable only for persons 11 years or over. No-one under 11 may rent or buy an ELSPA 11+ video game.

ELSPA 15+ - Suitable only for persons 15 years or over. No-one under 15 may rent or buy an ELSPA 15+ video game.

ELSPA 18+ - Suitable only for persons 18 years or over. No-one under 18 may rent or buy an ELSPA 18+ video game.
